“At first glance, the “strong black woman” doesn’t sound so bad. Who wouldn’t want to be the woman who can handle everything herself, maybe with a little help from God? The problem is that being determined to handle everything yourself also makes you less inclined or even ashamed to ask for help, be it from other people or from your state; or more inclined to ask for less than what you deserve.”

At first glance, the “super-intelligent asian american” doesn’t sound so bad. Who wouldn’t want to be smarter than everyone else and get all of the best test scores, just by virtue of their squinty eyes and yellow skin? The problem is that when people expect you to be smart and successful, it also means that your successes are ignored, even when you deserve praise— and lord forbid you raise your hand for help in class.

There’s no such thing as a “positive” stereotype— they’re all demeaning.
