From One Survivor to Another

Anonymous asked: I heard some things about transmisogyny in Gravity Falls? Can you confirm or deny this?

I think this may be mostly about S1 Episode 6: “Dipper vs. Manliness”. It has a lot of stuff about about Dipper trying to be more “manly” and buff and generic dude to impress his love interest, Wendy. It does have a positive message about manhood being more than being physically strong, but emotionally strong and capable of standing up for yourself.

However, there are some scenes that could be transmisogynistic— mostly laughing at how Dipper and this manly monster he fights, the Multi-Bear, both like “Disco Girl”, a knockoff of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” (and are teased for it). One of the lyrics in the parody song is about “being that girl”, etc. It didn’t bother me very much but I can definitely see how it could others.

Besides that episode, I can’t recall any other times when the show has been an issue.
